Ultimate BIOS Guide: Every Setting Decrypted and Explained!
Posted By: Grogan

"Every modern motherboard comes with an embedded Flash EEPROM module, otherwise known as the BIOS chip. Short for Basic Input Out System, this is the first bit of code executed when you boot your PC. The BIOS stores all kinds of essential information about your system, such as your CPU's clockspeed, the size and type of RAM you're running, the boot order of your media, what onboard devices are present, and much, much more. An improperly configured BIOS can prevent Windows (or Linux) from loading, while a finely tuned BIOS has the potential to significantly improve performance over that of a similarly spec'd machine."

80-way Thermal Interface Material Performance Test

"Prior to our 33-Way Thermal Compound Comparison article published back in March 2008, there had not been another project of its size available online. So when Benchmark Reviews revealed our test results, it was a surprise to find that many overclockers had been ill-informed by marketing hype and misleading enthusiast opinions. Benchmark Reviews later published several other complimentary articles for performance hardware enthusiasts, offering an instructional guide on Thermal Paste Application Methods and testing for the Best CPU Cooler Performance. As the author to both of those articles, I have discovered that the most critical factors pertaining to thermal cooling performance seems to be overlooked..."

"When Microsoft officially releases Windows 7 on October 22, 2009, they will be delivering to the world what they promised Windows Vista would be... with a few nifty extras, of course. So, you can't blame some folks for skipping Windows Vista and hanging onto Windows XP while Microsoft gets Windows 7 working."

Intel Core i7 975 3.33GHz Processor Tested

"When Intel pushed the Core i7 out the door it was not to top its rival, AMD, but to top its own Core 2 CPUs. We saw the i7 simply trounce on just about all other single socket systems (and some multi-socket systems as well). Intel did not sit back and relax, though; they took the C0 stepping and tweaked it to give it an extra edge. Soon everyone was talking about the D0 stepping of the i7; it had better headroom, better thermal tolerance and even seemed slightly faster than the same clocked C0 CPU."

AMD Phenom II X2 550 BE AM3 Processor

"Today at Computex, AMD took the wraps off of two highly anticipated processors: the Athlon II X2 250 and the Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition. Both are based on AMD's 45nm SOI process with the key difference being the amount of L3 cache. The Phenom II X2 550, codenamed Callisto, gets the full 6 MB cache of the Phenom II family and will serve as AMD's new flagship dual-core processor. The Athlon II X2 250, on the other hand, is based on the new native dual-core Regor die that omits the L3 cache completely and targets the mainstream segment. Benchmark Reviews was fortunate to receive samples of both processors and today we can officially share with you our results. In this review, we focus on the Phenom II X2 550 BE"

PC Power & Cooling Pro-Source 1500VA UPS

"PC Power & Cooling has just released an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), the Pro-Source 1500 UPS, somewhat sidestepping out of its element into an area traditionally dominated by APC, CyberPower Systems, and Tripp Lite. Also known as a backup power supply, UPSs are one of the oft-most overlooked components, yet arguably one of the most important investments of any PC build, not only to provide a power source in case your electricity goes out, but to ensure a clean flow of power to your pricey parts. Will the transition from PSU to UPS maker be a smooth one for PCP&P?"

Eee PC spotted running Android + Qualcomm 1GHz CPU

"The machine was installed with Googles upcoming Android operating system and we have to admit, it felt a bit strange on a Smartbook (as Qualcomm calls them) of this kind. The operating system is clearly suited for smaller devices and smart phones, but it was nice to get a look at it anyway. Operation was rather smooth and everything worked, albeit just a bit plain. We asked one of the product managers from Qualcomm to give us a demo of the system. It is based on Qualcomms Snapdragon platform which consists of a 1GHz CPU. Because of the platforms extremely low power consumption, no cooling is required which allows for ultra thin netbooks. It is capable of playing back 720p video with the current gen chips, and in the future 1080p will be supported with the faster clock processors."

"Two weeks ago~D-Link announced the introduction of a CAPTCHA to confirm configuration changes on some of its wireless routers. According to D-Link, the objective is to prevent that users whose machines have been owned by malware have the DNS settings in the router changes without the user's knowledge."

"The Plextor brand has found it's way in to many computer systems since they developed their first CD-ROM drive in 1989. Plextor has recognized the need for an easily mobile external DVD burner and introduced their new USB powered drive, the PX-610U. We were sent this DVD Super Multi Drive to review and we are anxious to see how it stands up to other DVD burners, both internal and external."
